Creating vessels that capture the feeling of nostalgia, longing and belonging. I captured this feeling by creating my abstract markings on the vessel by how the sky looked that day, letting my emotions and observations guide color, mark making and the shape of the vessel itself. The connection to the land is not only the clay body, but the meditative act of throwing, and painting. There are three collections of different styles of mark making within this exhibition. All following these premises, with the first part being a collection of mugs and cups that have a specific time period attached to them. They are two different skies, one from Saskatoon and one from Vancouver. Abstracting the patterns of the clouds and the atmosphere of a specific season and adding them onto a clay vessel. The Second is an experiment of the original idea, using different colors to correspond to different dates, and layering it makes you see the whole season instead of just one day. Using instinct and feeling to guide the placement of color and building the patterns. The last collection is my most prolific of the three, creating a fun pattern of color on clay bodies. These patterns came from the necessity of color in the everyday life of living in a colorless winter. Finding joy within the objects that you bring into your daily routine, it's a reminder to live life to the fullest, and brightest.Madeline Duval-Tyler is a multidisciplinary artist, working within Pottery and 3D animation. Originally from Saskatoon, she moved to Vancouver to attend Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Where she found her love of 3D animation and graduated in 2023 with a Bachelors of Media arts specializing in 3D animation. Her grad film combined her love of clay and passion for animation, with specialized 3D graphics that mimic claymation, earning the award The President’s Media Awards for Excellence (Best in 3D Computer Animation). She currently resides in Vancouver BC, creating ceramic vessels and volunteering within a local ceramics studio, while working within the animation industry. Her ceramic work has been featured at Slice Gallery, in the “Red Collective”, as well as at the Clay and Glass gallery in the Exhibition “Lest We Forget, Let Us Create. Artists Commemorate, Canada Remembers”. Her most recent work was featured in the “Land and Sky Exhibition”. The grey weather of Vancouver is what makes her believe that your everyday life deserves color. Her love of whimsy and colour, is what brings such prominent colors to both clay bodies and 3D animations. She matches organic forms to colorful glazes to create a whimsical world in the everyday household. When she is not working on animation or ceramics, you can find her in the outdoors of BC, snowboarding, hiking, paddleboarding, or just soaking up inspiration from mother nature.
